Your guide to getting into sailing

Fresh air, freedom and fitness. Sailing offers it all. After an active day on the deck with the wind in your face, you’ll be hard pushed not to feel invigorated. It can also be relaxing and a great way to clear your head.

Try it out

Check out taster sessions, like ‘Push the Boat Out’ to find out if sailing is your sport.

Get qualified

If you like it, why not join your local club and work towards some qualifications. The Royal Yachting Association has training for all abilities, ages and goals.

Start Yachting is for complete beginners, while an RYA Yachtmaster™ Certificate of Competence is the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers.

Find a club near you

Use the Royal Yachting Association’s club finder or visit their websites for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Racing

If you’re driven by adrenaline, get competitive with your sailing. Most clubs hold a weekend and weekday race series, with crewing opportunities often available if you want to try it out.

Disability sailing

There are plenty of opportunities for anyone who has a physical, sensory or learning impairment to start sailing. The Royal Yachting Association has classes and racing opportunities on offer to sailors with impairments.

Youth sailing

The Royal Yachting Association has a Youth Sailing Scheme, usually completed in small dinghies.
