Nothing beats the thrill of tearing down a snow-covered track. But you don’t have to hit the mountains to enjoy the adrenalin-rush of snowsports. There are plenty of dry slopes across the UK, as well as indoor options if you prefer staying warm...
Snowboarding and skiing
Skiing and snowboarding offer a proper workout, with an hour on the slopes burning off up to 500 calories – that’s about four large hot chocolates.
Now a Winter Olympic favourite, snowboarding hails from the 1920s when men would tie wooden planks to their feet and steer themselves down hills using horse reins. As well as racing, there’s freestyle snowboarding, which focuses on jumps and tricks.

Snowsports are massive fun at any age, but if you want to get your kids started early, most ski schools teach from as young as three.
For two or four people, bobsledding (also called bobsleighing) involves racing down an ice-track inside a four-runner sled – a bit like a giant bullet on skates. It’s a fast team sport, the racer at the back controlling the brakes while the front racer steers. Try it out through British Bobsleigh, the sport’s national governing body.
