How to become an athletics volunteer

Athletics is a sport led by volunteers, particularly those who support athletics and running clubs.

And some of the ways that this sport is supported are neither time consuming or long-term!

By giving a couple of hours of your time, you could be invaluable for the development of athletics and running in your local community, with or without a long-term commitment.

You do not need previous experience to get involved with your local athletics or running club/group. All you need is a smile and enthusiasm.

Volunteer with your local club

Coaching and Officiating barely scratch the surface of variety within athletics volunteering. Why not

find your nearest club and see if you can help? There are opportunities available from taking registers and selling sweets through to committee member roles and volunteer co-ordinating!

Help others achieve their personal best

If you are interested in beginning your coaching journey and supporting the development of athletes/runners, sharing in their successes, your first step is to attend a coaching course. If you’re in England, look at the England Athletics website to help you find the right course.

Scottish Athletics and Welsh Athletics websites also contain coaching information.

Become an Official

Becoming an official is a great way to enjoy athletics from a different perspective. It’s also a great opportunity to get outdoors, meet new friends and get closer to the action. Athletes can’t compete without Officials, so become a crucial cog in the wheel and qualify as an official!

Anyone can learn to officiate. Find information on officiating courses in England, Scotland and Wales.

Track and Field not your thing? No problem!

RunTogether is an England Athletics initiative based around getting people out and about, together, running and enjoying it! If you run to keep fit, why not get involved with your local RunTogether group? Your group will provide you with a community to join, as well as opportunities to support other runners by becoming a RunLeader, Guide Runner, Mental Health Champion, or RunLeader Mentor!
