Your guide to getting into athletics

Slip on those running shoes, hop, skip and jump with all your might or get that throwing arm into gear – whatever sparks your interest, athletics is a great sport to get in to with something for everyone.

Join a club

There are athletics clubs right across the country for people of all ages who are new to the sport and its varied disciplines.

Use British Athletics’ Club Search tool to find a club near you.

Running tips

Of course, running is free. Run Britain has plenty of advice and training tips for those looking to begin their jogging journey, or wanting to go faster and further.

If you want to run with other people, you might want to join Parkrun UK. They organise free, weekly 5km timed runs all over the country that are open to all. Use their events page to find a run on near you.

Start young

The Startrack programme is on hand to give eight to 15-year-olds real athletics experiences after school, during the holidays and at weekends – it’s where Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill started her athletics career aged 10.

See the Startrack events calendar to find an event or scheme in your area.
